Russian mixed hors d'oeuvres: blinis and breads of various kinds with savoury toppings, especially caviar, served in Russia with vodka. Traditionally, zakuski are an alternative to the first course of a meal, but they sometimes provide a pretheatre supper, followed by the main meal after the show.
