iamb [  am,  amb ] (plural iambs) or iambus [ ī ámbəss ] (plural iambuses or iambi) or iambic [ ī ámbik ] (plural iambics)

rhythm unit in poetry: a metrical foot of one short or unstressed syllable followed by one long or stressed syllable. 'The ploughman homeward plods his weary way' consists of five iambs.
