mosquito-borne infection: an arbovirus illness transmitted by mosquitoes that is similar to dengue. It occurs mainly in Africa and is characterized by fever, headache, an irritating rash, and severe pain in the joints.

[Mid-20th century. O'nyong-nyong< its name in a Nilotic language of Uganda and Sudan, literally 'very painful and weak']
