History

Formerly a remote Moorish fortress, the city of Madrid became Spain’s official capital in 1607 and immediately began to prosper. The province was created in 1833 and the autonomous region 150 years later. The Madrid region was the site of several important battles in the Spanish Civil War. For more information about the history of the city, see Madrid (city).
