History

The region has played a pivotal part in French history. In 57 bc Julius Caesar established the settlement Ducrocortorum (now Reims) as the capital of Gaul. From ad 496, with the crowning of Clovis, Reims was the traditional site for the coronation of all French kings. The region has long been a battleground, with the Hundred Years’ War in the 14th and 15th centuries, wars against Germany during the 19th century, World War I, and World War II all waged in Champagne. For history of the region of Champagne-Ardenne, see Champagne.
