Numerous battles between Allied and Austrian troops occurred along the river in World War I. In June 1918, Austrian troops advanced, forcing the Italian army back to the river, a line it held until October, when the final battles on the Piave began. The Austrians were attacked by the Allies at two points until, by the end of October, Austrian resistance had collapsed completely.
