Saale, river, Germany. It rises in the Fichtelgebirge range of north-eastern Bavaria, and flows generally north through Thuringia to join the Elbe River near Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt. Ancient towns along its course include Jena, Naumburg, and Halle. The Saale River is approximately 426 km (265 mi) long, and it is navigable as far as Naumburg.
