Memel Territory

Encyclopedia Article

Memel Territory (German, Memelgebiet or Memelland), former German territory on the east coast of the Baltic Sea, now part of Lithuania. The city of Memel, now called Klaipėda, was the capital of the territory. Lithuania seized the region early in 1923, and the next year the League of Nations made it a Lithuanian autonomous district. In March 1939, Germany obtained control of the territory. In October 1944, during World War II, it was taken by Soviet forces.
