Windows Live® Search Results Pierre Marivaux (1688-1763), French dramatist and novelist, born in Paris. He wrote a number of comedies about self-discovery, which his characters attain emotionally rather than intellectually. The French word marivaudage (“mild, witty flirting”) is derived from his manner of writing. Among his comedies are Love in Livery (1730; trans. 1730) and The Legacy (1736; trans. 1915). In his several unfinished novels he gave a penetrating portrayal of 18th-century middle-class French life. In 1742 he was elected a member of the Académie Française.
