Johannes Brønsted (1879-1947), Danish chemist, born in Varde. In 1908 he was awarded a Ph.D. degree and a professorship in chemistry at the University of Copenhagen. His most important work was in thermodynamics. In 1923 he announced a revolutionary theory, the result of experiments with acids and bases in solution, which challenged the classic definition of unconnected acids and bases with a new concept of conjugate acid-base systems.
