Carl XVI Gustaf (1946- ), King of Sweden (1973- ), the grandson of King Gustav VI Adolph, whom he succeeded. During his reign the last vestiges of authority were stripped from the Swedish Crown, leaving him a purely ceremonial figurehead. In 1976 he married a West German commoner, Silvia Sommerlath. The couple have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, born in 1977; Prince Carl, born in 1979; and Princess Madeleine, born in 1982.
