Ibiza

Ibiza, island, eastern Spain, one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It covers an area of 570 sq km (220 sq mi) and has a coastline approximately 210 km (130 mi) long. The highest point, at 472 m (1,550 ft), is Atalaiassa. The island’s climate is very mild, ranging from 12° C in January to 27° C in August. Ibiza and Formentera (also in the Balearics) are often called las islas Pitiusas (pine-covered islands); apart from pine trees, olives, figs, and almonds are grown, as well as a wide variety of flowers. Aside from agriculture, fishing, and crafts, the island’s economy is primarily based on tourism.

Ibiza is divided into five municipalities and has a population of 88,076 (2001). It is best known for its holiday resorts, clubs, and nightlife. Nevertheless, the interior of the island is relatively unspoilt. Places of interest include Portinatx, a popular beauty spot; salt fields at the southernmost tip of the island; Cueva Can Marca, prehistoric caves above Puerto de San Miguel; and the Hippy Market at Es Cana. The island’s biodiversity and historic significance were recognized in 1999, when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
