Euratom (Euratom), an organization to promote the development of nuclear energy for non-military purposes among member countries of the European Union (EU). Established by a treaty signed in Rome in 1957, Euratom began life on January 1, 1958. Its main research institute is in Ispra, Italy, but it undertakes joint research ventures with institutes in other countries. A common market for nuclear materials and equipment was enforced in 1959, and external tariffs were suspended.
