Map of Gulf of Guinea

Gulf of Guinea, arm of the Atlantic Ocean, western Africa, between Cape Palmas, at the south-eastern tip of Liberia, and Cape Lopez, Gabon. The gulf forms two bays, the Bight of Benin and the Bight of Bonny (Biafra). The gulf receives the waters of the Volta, Niger, Sanaga, and Ogooué rivers. The main islands in the gulf are Bioko (part of Equatorial Guinea), and the islands that make up São Tomé and Príncipe. There are rich offshore oil and mineral deposits in the Gulf. Oil production started in the area in the late 1990s.
