Jean Chapelain

Jean Chapelain (1595-1674), French man of letters and poet, born in Paris. He was secretary to Louis XIV and in 1635 became one of the organizers of the Académie Française. As a leading member of the academy, he established a code of laws to govern the group and organized the academy's project of compiling a dictionary and grammar of the French language. He spent 20 years writing La Pucelle, an epic poem about Joan of Arc. Twelve cantos were published in 1656 and the remaining 12 by 1882.
