Lake Saimaa, south-eastern Finland; about 1,300 sq km (500 sq mi) in area, it drains east through the Vuoksi (Russian, Vuoksa) River into Lake Ladoga in Russia. It is part of a lake system that covers about 4,400 sq km (1,700 sq mi) and includes more than 120 connecting lakes. The Saimaa Canal (completed 1856) links Lake Saimaa with the Gulf of Finland. The area abounds in scenic forests, which support timber production and attract many tourists.
