Marsala (ancient Lilybaeum), Italian city and seaport at the western tip of Sicily, on the Mediterranean Sea. Marsala trades in grain and salt, and is well known for its sweet Marsala wine, the favourite drink of Lord Nelson. Here, in 1860, the Italian nationalist Giuseppe Garibaldi began his conquest of Sicily. Population 82,337 (2007 estimate).
