Gulf of Corinth, arm of the Ionian Sea, between the Pelopónnisos Region and the Central Greece and Euboea Region of Greece. The gulf extends east from the Gulf of Patraïkós, another arm of the Ionian Sea, to the Isthmus of Corinth. The isthmus, about 6 km (4 mi) wide, nearly separates the Peloponnese Peninsula from central Greece. The gulf, which has an average width of about 24 km (15 mi) and is approximately 130 km (80 mi) long, is linked to the Aegean Sea by the Corinth Canal, completed in 1893, across the Isthmus of Corinth. In ancient times vessels were frequently pulled to and from the gulf overland across the isthmus. The principal port on the gulf is the city of Corinth at the western end of the canal.
