Bottrop, city in west central Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Rhine-Herne Canal in the industrial Ruhr district adjoining Essen. Bottrop is foremost an industrial city, manufacturing chemicals, steel, machinery, and textiles. Coalfields in the surrounding area began to be exploited in the 1860s, which soon transformed Bottrop from a small town into a busy centre of industrial technology. Population (1989 estimate) 116,400.
