William Sidney Mount

William Sidney Mount (1807-1868), American painter, born in Setauket, New York State. He studied at the National Academy of Design, New York, and was made a full academician in 1832. He painted portraits, including one of the statesman Daniel Webster, but is best known for his many skilful genre pictures and landscapes. Examples of his work are Eel Spearing at Setauket (1845, New York State Historical Association, Cooperstown) and Bargaining for a Horse (1835, New-York Historical Society, New York).
