Volturno, river, south central Italy. It rises in the Apennines, east of Rome, and flows some 177 km (110 mi) south, south-east, and west, emptying into the Gulf of Gaeta, in the Tyrrhenian Sea north-west of Naples. The city of Capua is located on the Volturno River.
