Restoration, term employed in the history of England and France in connection with the re-establishment of monarchical government. In England it is applied to the accession to the throne of Charles II in 1660 after the fall of the Commonwealth and Protectorate (see English Restoration). In France the first restoration refers to the accession of Louis XVIII in 1814, after the abdication of Napoleon; the second restoration refers to Louis's reinstatement in 1815 after the “Hundred Days”.
