Main

Main, river, Germany, a major tributary of the River Rhine. It is formed by the union of the White and the Red Main rivers, near Kulmbach, in north-eastern Bavaria. The Main flows west for 494 km (307 mi) and enters the Rhine opposite the city of Mainz. The most important city on the Main is Frankfurt. It is linked by a canal from Bamberg to the Danube near Kelheim.
