Fichtelgebirge
Encyclopedia Article
Fichtelgebirge (German, “pine mountains”), mountain group, east central Germany, in Bavaria. It is connected with the Bohemian Forest in the south-east, Thüringer Wald in the north-west, and the Erzegebirge Range in the north-east. Various headwaters of the Elbe, Danube, and Rhine rivers originate in the Fichtelgebirge. The highest peak is the Schneeberg (1,053 m/3,455 ft above sea level). The slopes of the Fichtelgebirge are heavily forested, and the area contains valuable deposits of copper, iron, and lead ores, as well as many kinds of marble.
