Sava or Save, river, south-eastern Europe, an important tributary of the Danube. It rises in the Julian Alps, north-west Slovenia, and flows south-east, joining the Danube at Belgrade, Serbia. It is about 940 km (584 mi) long and is navigable for about 563 km (350 mi).
