Thomas Caine

Encyclopedia Article

Thomas Caine (1853-1931), English novelist and playwright, born in Runcorn, Cheshire. Caine first studied architecture, then turned to journalism; he began writing novels in 1885. Many of his works, such as The Christian (1897) and The Eternal City (1901), effectively combined moral fervour with melodrama. His novels The Deemster (1887), The Manxman (1894), and The Woman of Knockaloe (1923) give a picture of life on the Isle of Man. Caine travelled widely as a propagandist for the English cause in World War I. His lifelong project, Life of Christ (1938), was published after his death.
