Karst

Encyclopedia Article

Karst, plateau region in the Dinaric Alps of Croatia and Slovenia, characterized by its thick, well-jointed deposits of limestone. The region exhibits almost all the classic limestone features, and similar regions in other parts of the world are often said to have karst topographies. Bordering the Adriatic Sea, the Karst region is 480 km (300 mi) long and 80 km (50 mi) wide and has usual elevations of 1,200 to 1,850 m (4,000 to 6,000 ft) with some peaks up to 2,400 m (8,000 ft). The south-western edge faces the Adriatic Sea in an abrupt wall fronted by lower narrow limestone ridges.
