Map of Limfjorden

Limfjorden, waterway in northern Denmark, 180 km (112 mi) long, that cuts across the entire Danish peninsula and connects the North Sea on the west with the Kattegat strait on the east. The Limfjorden is a natural waterway, although it has been deepened in some places to aid shipping. It separates Thisted and Hjørring, the northern provinces of Denmark, from the rest of the peninsula. The eastern end is narrow and comparatively straight, but from Ålborg heading west, the Limfjorden consists of a series of lake-like enlargements connected by narrow passages. There are many irregularly shaped bays, peninsulas, and small islands in this section. The central enlargement is the broad Løgstør. Among the cities along the Limfjorden are Lemvig, Nykøbing, Thisted, Ålborg, and Hals.
