Manuel Azaña y Díaz

Manuel Azaña y Díaz
Manuel Azaña was the leading figure in the Spanish republic, formed in 1931. During his first term as prime minister (1931-1933) he helped to limit the influence of the Catholic Church in education and health care, reduce the size of the military, and introduce a measure of autonomy in Catalunya. In 1936 he was the driving force behind the Popular Front government, but was forced into exile in 1939. He died soon afterwards.
