Eight-Oared Racing Shells

Eight-Oared Racing Shells
Racing craft, called “shells”, are long, slender, and light. Each rower uses only one oar, and usually the left and right oars are alternated. The cox at the stern of the shell steers the boat, sets the pace, and keeps the team rowing in unison as they are doing here. The crew in the top boat are leaning forward to put their oars into the water while the lower crew are halfway through their stroke.
