The English author, Anthony Burgess, was prolific, highly erudite, and a brilliant stylist. He is perhaps best known for the terrifying futuristic novel A Clockwork Orange, made notorious by Stanley Kubrick’s film version. However Burgess also wrote a biography of Shakespeare, numerous film and television scripts, and several orchestral works. The lines quoted here are taken from his novel Earthly Powers (1980), an ambitious mixture of fact and fiction forming a panoramic survey of the 20th century.
