Sonia O'Sullivan was the first Irishwoman to win a major athletics championship when she won the 5,000 m track world title in 1995. She held European and world records at several different distances on the track as well. She is seen here competing in the 1997 World Cross-Country Championships in Turin, Italy. Running behind her in this photograph is the eventual second place finisher, the British athlete Paula Radcliffe.
