Temple at Abu Simbel
In 1964, UNESCO co-ordinated an international rescue operation to save two temples dedicated to Ramses II from inundation by the lake created by the building of the High Dam at Aswân. For two years a team supported by donations from over 50 countries worked to dismantle the threatened monuments. The temples were transported stone by stone and meticulously reassembled on higher ground above the water level.
