The refined, highly civilized quality of Gabriel Fauré’s works embodies the aristocratic qualities of the French tradition. Fauré was primarily a composer of lyric pieces and chamber music, although his larger Requiem Mass, composed in 1887, is considered his masterpiece. This example from the introduction to the Kyrie encapsulates the grave and dignified character of the work.
