| The American artist John Trumbull is best known for his paintings of scenes from the American War of Independence. He fought in the war himself, and was at one time aide-de-camp to George Washington. The subject of this work is the first major battle of the war, which was fought on the heights overlooking Boston harbour at Breed’s Hill and Bunker Hill. From fortified positions, the Americans repulsed two British charges. On the third charge, the Americans ran out of gunpowder and were driven from their positions. Trumbull witnessed the battle and imbues the scene with the drama, emotion, and sweeping movement characteristic of the Baroque and Romantic styles. |
