Twentieth-century Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe writes about the impact of the modern world on traditional African culture. Achebe won international renown for his first book, Things Fall Apart (1958), a novel set in eastern Nigeria at the time of British colonialism. In the book, an exiled tribal leader returns to his village after seven years, only to find that colonial laws and Christianity have sapped the identity of the tribe. An actor recites this excerpt from the novel.
