The tarantella is an Italian folk dance that takes its name from the town of Taranto. It is performed as a couples’ dance and features a distinguishable melody which alternates between major and minor keys as it gradually increases in speed. Popular at village dances, weddings, and other communal celebrations, the tarantella is often performed with various combinations of instruments. In this example, the pitipu, a recorder-like plugged flute, is featured along with castanets, tambourine, various clappers, and rattles.
