The French statesman and general Charles de Gaulle led the French forces against Germany during World War II and helped France’s postwar restoration. After France surrendered to Germany in 1940, de Gaulle escaped to London and organized Resistance forces in Britain, the French colonies, and within occupied France. De Gaulle gave this speech when the Allies finally liberated France from German forces in 1944.
