Naples, in southern Italy, fans around the Bay of Naples, an inlet of the Tyrrhenian Sea. One of the country’s busiest seaports dominates the city and provides an economic engine for the largely underdeveloped region. Naples is known for its active, colourful community, as well as for its cultural and historic institutions. Mount Vesuvius, responsible for the destruction of ancient Pompeii, can be seen from the city, background.
