A Global Epidemic

A Global Epidemic
About 33.2 million people around the world are currently infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). New HIV infections have levelled off or even declined in most developed countries, but the virus is spreading rapidly through much of the developing world. In some areas of sub-Saharan Africa, one in three adults is carrying the virus. The map shown here reflects the known global distribution of HIV/AIDS as of 2002.
