Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. In the early 1990s it measured 3,323 m (10,902 ft). The slopes of this massive cone-shaped volcano contain over 300 craters and smaller volcanic cones that have formed following numerous eruptions over the last few centuries. The latest eruption occurred in 2001.
