French composer Jean Philippe Rameau was known as an organist and theorist, primarily due to the publication of his Traité de l’Harmonie (Treatise on Harmony, 1722). As a composer it was difficult for Rameau to gain respect in Paris, where the entire cultural life of France was situated. He was eventually taken under the patronage of the nobleman Alexandre-Jean-Joseph Le Riche de la Poupliniére. Despite the popularity Rameau gained with La Poupliniére’s help, his works were often criticized as too “scientific” or “unnatural”.
