Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale established the foundations of modern nursing with her treatment of the sick and injured during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. Spurred by reports about the inadequacy of health care in the British barracks, Nightingale contacted the British secretary of war and volunteered her services. She went to the Crimea with 38 volunteer nurses and assumed direction of all nursing operations at the war front. Her efficient and effective procedures set the standard for modern nursing.
