Northern Portugal's Rivers

Northern Portugal's Rivers
Portugal's northern region begins at the Miño and extends south through the mountains, plateaux, and plains of the Northern Tablelands to the Mondego. Crossing east to west, the Douro River cuts a deep, narrow valley through the northern part of the country. South of the Douro, the high plateaux of the northeast descend into hilly areas that are covered with olive groves and Mediterranean scrub vegetation called maquis.
